Tannenberg 1914

As the retreat from Mons was unfolding in August 1914, 500 miles away to the east, on the other side of Germany, the Battle of Tannenberg, an equally important engagement, was being fought between German and Russian forces. This absorbing work details the events which led to this monumental clash of arms, which dealt the Russians a serious blow. The commanders, strategy and units involved are all listed, and together with the maps, make this a great general read. The Eastern Front in WWI has been overlooked too often and this work corrects that imbalance. A disaster for Russia, which at the time was able to absorb the losses, and the distances involved, remind the reader of the vastness of the Eastern Front in WWI. If you have never thought about this theatre of operations in WWI, this work will make you reconsider your opinion and wish to read more on the subject.
