Heinnie Haynes Owlet Knife

Lightweight “Neck” knives have a very useful role to play in Bushcraft life. Hanging around the neck, hence the name, they are always on-hand for any task around camp or on a hike.

The Owlet from CRKT, designed by RMJ Tactical, is a compact neck knife. RMJ Tactical is known for their one-piece construction knives and Tomahawks. The Owlet is made from one piece of 8Cr13MoV stainless steel and it only weighs 50-grams. That’s not to say it’s not tough, it can prepare meals, cut open boxes and do something else as well (wait for it). The handle feels so, so ergonomic to hold, the forefinger fits well behind the blade, and the thumb comes to rest naturally on the spine of the knife.

It has a glass-reinforced nylon sheath which the knife clicks into securely, with six 5mm diameter holes adorning the outer edges. CRKT give you a black paracord tie on the knife’s handle, as well as a neck cord with a spring toggle to adjust the length of the loop around the neck. On grabbing the handle, the sheath is cut out in such a way as to aid the unsheathing. It does feel very secure in the sheath with no chance of it falling out inadvertently.

Lotta bottle

The finish of the knife is black acid and stone washed, making it highly durable and pleasant to the eye. The last trick it has up its compact sleeve is the very handy bottle opener lip inside the handle behind the 6mm lanyard hole (there it is!). There are two more holes 5- and 6.5mm in the body of the blade to lighten the knife. All in all, I was not expecting the Owlet to be as brilliant as it turned out to be. The blade shape and layout are very well-designed, and it’s so light around your neck you’d hardly know it was there until you needed it.

It’s not an expensive knife either, and I can see it becoming very popular. Throw in the fact that you can also open a hard-earned beer (or soft drink) at the end of the day, and you will agree with me that it punches above its weight.
